WHAT IS BIOTERRORISM?
Like other types of terrorism, bioterrorism is a malicious act that is used to inflict illness and death in people, animals, or plants. Bioterrorism accomplishes this by the intentional release of biological agents. These biological agents are microorganisms such as germs, viruses, and bacteria that release toxins and poisons. Although initially found only in nature, developing technology has allowed for the genetic manipulation of these microorganisms. Unfortunately, terrorists are using such methods to make these harmful agents resistant towards medicinal treatment, more contagious, and, ultimately, less preventable.
